HEAVYWEIGHT VS STANDARD TEES: WHAT 7.1 OZ MEANS

Every t-shirt listing mentions a weight in ounces and almost nobody explains what it means. It is the most useful spec on the page, and it is the main thing separating a shirt you wear for years from one that lasts a summer.

WHAT THE NUMBER MEASURES

Ounces per square yard of fabric. A 4.5 oz jersey is thin and light. A 7.1 oz jersey is roughly sixty percent denser. It is not a quality score, just a density measurement, but density drives almost everything you notice about a shirt.

WHAT YOU CAN FEEL

• 4.0 to 4.5 oz: the standard promotional or fast fashion tee. Light, semi transparent in sun, tends to cling. Cheap to produce and cheap to print.
• 5.0 to 6.0 oz: mid weight. Most retail t-shirts sit here. Fine, unremarkable.
• 6.5 to 7.5 oz: heavyweight. Holds its shape, hangs away from the body, opaque in daylight, structured enough to look deliberate rather than slept in.
• 8.0 oz and up: very heavy. Excellent in winter, uncomfortable on a warm course.

For golf the 7 oz range is close to ideal. Substantial enough to look sharp and hold a boxy cut, breathable enough for four hours walking in the sun.

WHY HEAVYWEIGHT COSTS MORE

More cotton per shirt, and the good stuff, combed and ring spun, costs more per pound. Heavier fabric is slower to cut and sew, and it takes ink differently, so screen printing takes more care.

The honest trade is that a heavyweight tee costs roughly two to three times a promotional blank to make. It also survives a great deal more washing without going thin at the shoulders.

GARMENT DYED VS PIECE DYED

The other spec worth knowing. Piece dyed means the fabric was coloured before the shirt was made. Garment dyed means the finished shirt was dyed, which gives slightly uneven, softer colour with more depth, and pre shrinks the garment so it holds its size.

Garment dyeing costs more and produces small variations between shirts. That is the point of it.

WHAT TO LOOK FOR IN A LISTING

If a listing gives you the weight, the cotton type and the dye process, someone made deliberate choices. If it says premium quality cotton and nothing else, it is a blank someone bought wholesale.
